Who says accountants are boring? Celeste Current, a long-term accountant for Ag Workers Insurance, is just the opposite. She is a friendly face you can always count on, but a few things about her may surprise you. From belly dancing to having a drummer as a father, Celeste lives an eventful life.
I had the opportunity to speak with Celeste and learn more about her life in and out of the office.
Role in the Company
Celeste Current has been a member of the Ag Workers family for about 12 years. Her journey started with the company when one of her friends working as a temp encouraged her to apply. What started as contract work quickly turned into a full-time career. Celeste was contracted in 2008 to help set up Diamond, a system still used by Ag Workers today. After the completion of the setup, Celeste was offered a job in the accounting department. She eagerly accepted and worked part-time for the first year to help care for an ill family member and then began working full-time. After all of these years at Ag Workers, Celeste has remained in the accounting department as an Accounting Specialist and loves her job.
As an Accounting Specialist, Celeste is responsible for reconciling daily bank transactions such as credit cards, EFT, e-check payments, and cash payments. She also maintains the daily/monthly worksheets for the Ag Workers Group of Companies, including Ag Workers, Worth, AG-Pro, and AG Finance Company, and assists in the month-end. If that is not impressive enough, Celeste is on the Board as Assistant Treasurer for the AG Finance Company.
When working at a company as long as Celeste has, you form many connections and bonds with your coworkers. That is why I was not surprised when Celeste said her favorite thing about working at Ag Workers is her work family! Her and the accounting department have formed an especially strong bond over the years and enjoy spending time together both in and out of the office. Celeste also appreciates that no one goes hungry at Ag Workers, thanks to all of the great food provided throughout the year for office holidays and celebrations. In the past, the office has enjoyed Andy’s Frozen Custard, Babe’s Chicken, and Olive Garden, to name a few. Speaking of office holidays, it would be wrong not to mention Celeste’s superior costumes for the office Halloween costume contests. Every Halloween, Celeste outdoes herself. This year she was Violet Beauregarde from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Celeste is very family-oriented and loves spending time with her loved ones. She has been married to her husband Mike for 41 years. They met for the first time in 1976 in line for food at Six Flags, and it was love at first sight. The happy couple has been inseparable ever since and tied the knot in 1979. Now fast forward to 2020, and they have two amazing sons, Greg and Michael, two beautiful daughters-in-law, Shelley and Karissa, four grandkids, and a cat named Munchkin.
During the pandemic, Celeste has been thankful to be able to visit with her family. However, she has not been able to have large family gatherings with all of her and Michael’s families like they normally do. That is why once the pandemic is over, the first thing Celeste wants to do is have a large get together with about 100 family members.
Celeste had a childhood that many kids would envy. She was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas but spent much of her childhood traveling across the United States. Her father is a drummer for The Big Beats, so growing up, her family traveled with his band. Her parents are also very active in Renaissance Fairs and got the rest of the family involved. From a young age, Celeste would take belly dancing lessons with her mom and sister. Then in 1996, they began performing at The Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, with Isis and The Star Dancers. She stopped performing in 2007 but still very much enjoys the art form.
Stereotypes about accountants being boring and introverted is a myth. Celeste is proof of this. She lives an amazing life and has an outgoing personality that makes her fit in perfectly at Ag Workers. We are happy she joined the team when she did and are thankful for her contributions to the company.
