4 M’s for a Mosquito-Free Yard

Nothing ruins backyard BBQs faster than ravenous mosquitoes. Not only do their bites itch like crazy, but they can also carry dangerous diseases like West Nile and the Zika virus.  As the weather heats up – are you ready for Mosquito season in Texas?

Here are our 4 M’s for making sure mosquitoes don’t invite themselves to your next backyard bash.

Monitor areas where water can accumulate.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs near standing water. Eliminating possible breeding grounds is the first step in controlling mosquito populations.

  • Clean out clogged gutters, irrigation lines, & runoff tubes
  • Empty buckets, flowerpots, wheelbarrows, etc.
  • Cover trash cans, grills, & firewood piles
  • Drain or recycle old tires
  • Change water in pet bowls often
  • Change water in bird baths & fountains weekly
  • Keep pools and ponds treated and circulating
  • Keep boats and kayaks drained and covered/overturned
  • Drain and fill low areas in the yard
Maintain a neat yard.

Keeping a manicured lawn can deter pesky mosquitoes! Mow grass and tall weeds where water can accumulate. Trim back overgrown shrubs where mosquitoes hide during the day. Fix leaky faucets and hoses. Install or repair window and door screens to keep them outside your home.

Manage your time outside.

No one wants to be a hostage in their home. Avoid itchy bites by wearing loose, light-colored clothes that cover your body. Also, apply an EPS-registered insect repellent when outside.

Meet the neighbors.

Mosquitoes don’t stop at your property line. Share these tips with your neighbors! Be on the lookout for possible trouble spots in your neighborhood.
