Our Story

The story of Ag Workers Insurance is rooted in the life of its founder, William C. Young, and his commitment to high ethical standards and hard work.
Young worked tirelessly to obtain a degree in agriculture from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) during the Great Depression and landed a position as a vocational ag teacher. From there, he successfully pursued a career in life insurance selling policies to teachers through Educator’s Mutual Insurance. When that company failed to deliver on its promises to return profits to its policyholders, Young saw an opportunity to create an insurance company that genuinely protected its policyholders.
After serving his country in World War II and obtaining a degree in business administration by correspondence from Texas Tech, Young met with the Texas State Board of Insurance to present his groundbreaking vision for a new insurance company that would put policy owners first. By 1946, after raising funds across Texas, he had secured funding and obtained the charter for National Farm Life.
Young then founded Ag Workers Mutual Auto Insurance two years later when policy owners declared they needed more than just life insurance. After visiting with influential people in agriculture across Texas, Ag Workers was able to insure 300 cars simultaneously to raise the $25,000 necessary to establish an auto insurance company exclusively for the state’s agricultural professionals.

Our history

1912
William Clarence Young, the founder of National Farm Life and Ag Workers Insurance, was born in Weinert, Texas on May 14th.
1935
Young graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in ag economics, married his sweetheart Hazel Boyd, and began teaching vocational agriculture.
1945
After serving in the army for two years, Brigham was honorably discharged and began working on his idea for a unique insurance company that would share its profits with policy owners.
1946
The charter for National Farm Life was granted, and Brigham became one step closer to turning his idea into a reality.
1948
Young founded Ag Workers Mutual Auto Insurance Company and began writing auto insurance policies.
1949
Both companies moved into their first real home office, the North Fort Worth Bank building in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards.
1966
After years of growth, a 20-acre tract of land was purchased for a new home office and was celebrated with an all-out groundbreaking ceremony, symbolizing the past, present, and future.
1982
Marcus Hill was promoted to Vice President after working for Ag Workers for more than a decade.
1984
Marcus Hill was appointed to the Board of Directors.
1987
Ag Workers moved into their own home office where they are still headquartered in Haltom City, TX.
1988
Marcus Hill became President and began the Ag Workers Insurance intern program to teach students the importance of networking, hard work, and the ins and outs of insurance.
2006
Marcus Hill was elected Chairman of the Board.
2009
Insureberry (formerly Ag-Pro), Ag Workers wholly owned subsidiary agency, was founded to offer policy owners more lines of insurance coverage, including home, renters, farm & ranch, commercial, and more.
2016, 2017, 2018, & 2019
Ag Workers received three Val-Choice Awards for best claims handling, service, and value.
2019
Ag Workers launched its app, making it easy for policy owners to review policy documents, make payments, and more.
2020
Marcus Hill retired, and Mike Toole was appointed President & CEO of Ag Workers Insurance. Hill remains Ag Workers’ Chairman of the Board.
2023
Ag Workers celebrated its 75th Anniversary, streamlined the digital insurance quoting process, and partnered with Safelite to provide customers with nationwide round-the-clock glass claims reporting services and high-quality repairs.
