Cheap Family-Friendly Activities to Do This Summer

Summer family vacations are what a lot of families look forward to every year. It is the time when the family gets to go away and relax for a few days. But things don’t always work out the way we plan.

Many family vacations are canceled due to COVID-19.

While this is devastating to those that had their once-in-a-lifetime trip planned for a while now, we must adapt. And there is no doubt in my mind that this summer will still be memorable. So let’s take advantage of all the time we get to spend surrounded by our loved ones.

Here is a list of a few family fun activities to help make your summer great!

1. Go on a Picnic

Picnics are fun for the whole family and a nice change of pace. Pack a bag with food, drinks, a blanket, sunscreen, and a speaker. Sit and relax while listening to music and eating some of your favorite foods. Most importantly, have fun!

2. Play a Board Game or Cards

There are countless board games, both new and old. A few of my favorites are Monopoly, Scrabble, and Pictionary. Go and check your attic and see what games you have stored away. As for card games, Uno, Crazy Eights, and Gin Rummy are all fun. But the best card game of all is Nerts, which is a combination of Solitaire and Speed. It can get very competitive and is very fast-paced, which makes it even better. Who doesn’t like a little friendly competition?

3. Make Family TikToks

Parents, if you have a teenager or young adult, the probability that your child has a TikTok is very high. It is the new social media craze. Families are coming together and making hilarious TikToks that are going viral. One family has a viral series they have dubbed “Quarantine Olympics,” which is a big hit with TikTokers.

If you aren’t convinced yet, just wait.

How would you feel about being on the news? Well, if your TikTok goes viral, this isn’t too far-fetched. Some of the most creative videos have already been featured on the news and received thousands if not millions of views. Maybe you could be next.

4. Have a Themed Dinner

This has to be one of the coolest new trends. Families all over are picking a theme and dressing up for a fun-filled dinner. Some of my favorite themes I have seen are when family members dress like one another, stars from Tiger King, or Disney characters. Be creative and have fun with it!

5. Participate in a 5k

Doing a 5k is fun for the whole family and often supports a great cause. Do not fret; you do not have to run the race. Trust me, I have participated in several, and I am not a runner by any means. Everyone can go at their own pace. Virtual 5ks are also great because you don’t have to go to a designated location. RunDisney has a virtual series and has unique medals for finishers. Look up and see what 5k you and your family want to take part in.

6. Go Camping

Channel your inner survivor and go camping. Be sure to pack the essentials. You will need a sleeping bag, tent, bug spray, flashlights, and chairs to start. Make the night of it by roasting marshmallows and exchanging stories. There is nothing better than sitting around the fire with loved ones eating s’mores.

I hope that you have a great summer even though your plans may have changed and that these activities will ease some of your family’s summertime bordem.
