Tips to Keep Your Car Running as Temperatures Dive

Fall is here.

While you’re busy savoring the warm, homey dishes, refreshingly cool nights, and the crackle of leaves in the wind, keep in mind, Winter is coming!

October is Fall Car Care Month, and we’ve rounded up a few tips to help you avoid the headache of a costly breakdown this winter season.

  • Battery – Batteries should last between 3 to 5 years, but it is still a good idea to make sure the terminal connections are clean, tight, and corrosion-free. You can have your battery professionally tested at a service station, auto parts store, or repair shop to ensure it’s in good working order. Replace a worn-out battery as soon as possible to avoid being stranded.
  • Wiper Blades – Good wiper blades will clear the glass with each pass. Streaks or missed spots are signs that it’s time to buy replacements. Bonus tip: To help prevent your wiper blades from becoming worn out, be sure to use a scraper to get rid of any icy windshield buildup.
  • Antifreeze & Other Fluids – Top off your reservoir with a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze or flush the radiator if it’s time to replace your antifreeze completely. Keep in mind coolant levels should only be checked when the engine is cold. Also, be sure the engine oil, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids are at proper safety levels.
  • Tire Tread & Tire Pressure – Replace tires if you notice bulging or bald spots to avoid losing traction in the rain, ice, and snow that comes with wintery weather. Even if they are in good shape, keep track of your tire pressure to prevent premature tire wear or tread separation.
  • Emergency Road Kit – Update your road kit by stocking up on winter essentials like jumper cables, warning devices, a basic tool kit, a first aid kit, an ice scraper, drinking water, non-perishable snacks, gloves, hats, and blankets.
