6 Tips to Improve Gas Mileage

How would you feel if you could save money at the pump? With these helpful tips, you can improve your gas mileage and save a few cents on each trip to the gas station. After all, gas prices are slowly back on the rise as the U.S. starts to reopen, so now is the perfect time to make a few changes.

Here are six tips to help improve your gas mileage!

1. Get an alignment

Driving on uneven surfaces, such as potholes, can mess with your car’s alignment, especially if you have done it consistently, thanks to Texas’ never-ending construction. This can affect your tires and your engine, reducing your car’s gas mileage. The best solution is to get an alignment every two to three years or if you notice your vehicle veering to one side.

2. Check your tire pressure

Driving with low tire pressure increases your tire’s rolling resistance and burns more fuel than needed. A quick and simple fix is to air your tires whenever your tire pressure exceeds the recommended psi. Discount Tire does free tire pressure checks if you want to check yours today.

3. Remove excess weight

The more weight you have in your car, the harder your engine must work. The harder your engine must work, the less gas mileage you receive. It is essential to clean out any unnecessary, heavy items from your vehicle.

4. Don’t speed

Getting to your destination as quickly as possible seems like a good idea. But in all reality, this may not be the best option if you want to reduce your gas usage. You can improve your gas mileage by slowing down a few miles per hour.

5. Use the AC sparingly

Due to drag, using the AC on the highway is the better option. But when on regular roadways with lower speed limits, it is better to turn the AC off and roll down your windows.

6. Stop idling

If you stop for more than a minute or two, turn your engine off. This will decrease the amount of gas your car consumes and save you a few extra cents. It may seem shocking, but at least it was for me. Growing up, I was always told restarting your car uses up more fuel than idling. But newer cars are more efficient, and it is better to restart your engine than idle for several minutes at a time.

These are a few tips that will help improve your gas mileage. But if you want to save money, the best option is to carpool. While this is the cheapest and best option, it is not always the most practical. By commenting below, let us know what you do to save money at the pumps. We would love to hear what you have to say!
