Giving Back—Texas Volunteer Opportunities

Giving back to your community is one of the best gifts you can give—providing hope to those who desperately need it.

People of all ages can find some way to do their part, whether through donating clothes, helping out a friend, or simply picking up trash on the side of the road.

Here is a list of potential volunteer activities for various ages.

Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit organization that aims to feed hungry children worldwide. The meals, ManaPacks, are hand-packed by volunteers and include four items: vitamin-packed flavoring, dried vegetables, soy, and rice.

Shifts are only two hours, but you will be surprised by how much you can achieve. At the end of each session, the number of boxes volunteers have completed is totaled and shared. They also provide statistics on how many children your group has helped. It is astonishing how much can be done in such little time. The event is not only for a good cause but is fun. Individuals can talk to one another and sing to the music that is played at the venue.

This volunteer opportunity comes with some great perks. It is easy for kids to participate and get involved with. The only restraint is that children must be five years or older. Plus, individuals who cannot stand for long periods have the option to sit and take part in other jobs. Strong individuals who want to get a workout in can help refill supplies for the packers.

Feed My Starving Children has permanent locations in several states. As for Texas, they have one permanent location in Richardson. They also offer MobilePack events, which are at a local venue. These are short-term events that are at various locations throughout the state. Check out the Feed My Starving Children website to keep updated on when they are coming to cities near you.

Animal Shelters

Animal rescue shelters are always in need of extra help. There are millions of animals that get sent to the shelter every year. These poor pets need to be cared for and looked after until they find their forever home. While volunteering, you can perform a variety of duties. These tasks include walking animals, cleaning cages, grooming, feeding, watering, etc.

Volunteering at an animal shelter is fun for any animal lover. You can see the pets and get to interact with them. This will brighten your day and theirs because they lack the affection a family provides.

Animal shelters are scattered all around. The odds are you live closer to one than you might think. Look to see, which one is nearest you, and give them a call to see when you can come in and help.

Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House provides temporary housing for families with a child in area hospitals. This way, parents do not have to be far away from their sick children. The Ronald McDonald House provides home-cooked meals, private bedrooms, and play areas for families.

Volunteers have several ways they can choose to help. Individuals who want to form a group can make a meal for the house’s residents. The volunteers pick a meal to make and buy the needed ingredients. Then cook the meal at the Ronald McDonald House and serve the residents. Afterward, volunteers clean up the mess. Groups can also choose to host a family activity. Some activities might include hosting a craft, an outdoor activity, or a movie.

Volunteers can also choose to work individually rather than in a group. These opportunities include working at the front desk, in the kitchen area, or in the family room, helping with family activities, or driving the van.

Ronald McDonald Houses are located all over the world. As for Texas, they have several locations. These include sites in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and Galveston. Look to see if there are any locations near you.
